LG Washer UE Error Code: Unbalanced Load and How to Fix It

Also shown or searched as: Ub

UE on an LG washer, shown as Ub on some models, means the laundry piled up on one side and the washer could not even it out by itself. Pause the cycle, spread the load around the drum, keep it about two-thirds full and check that the washer does not rock. Blankets belong on the Duvet or Bedding cycle.

What to try first

  1. 1

Pause and spread the laundry out

Press Start/Pause, wait for the door to unlock, and pull the items apart. Arrange them evenly around the drum, close the door and restart.

  2. 2

    Aim for a two-thirds load

Take a few things out of a packed drum, or add a few towels to a tiny load, so the clothes have room to move.

  3. 3

Use the right cycle for bulky things

Wash one blanket or duvet at a time on the Duvet, Bedding or Blanket cycle with a Medium spin, and padded or down jackets on Sportswear with a Medium spin. For pillows and cushions, take the stuffing out and wash only the cover.

  4. 4

Fix how you use laundry nets

Fill each net to about two-thirds and wash two or three nets together with other clothes, never one net by itself.

  5. 5

    Level the washer

Rock it from the front, the back and each side. If it shifts, use a wrench to adjust the leg on the low side until all four feet press firmly on the floor. A bubble level laid on the top, first front to back and then side to side, confirms it; keep the legs as short as practical.

  6. 6

    Run an empty spin

Start a spin with nothing in the drum. If it runs quietly, the washer itself is fine and the load caused the code.

Most likely causes of UE

  1. 1. Laundry bunched on one side of the drum (most common)

You open the door and find a wet clump on one side, often a sheet that has wrapped itself around smaller items.

  2. 2. A load that is far too big or far too small (most common)

The drum is packed to the top, or it holds only a couple of heavy pieces with nothing to balance them.

  3. 3. A blanket, duvet or puffy jacket on a regular cycle (common)

UE shows up mainly on days you wash bedding or winter coats on Normal or Cotton.

  4. 4. One laundry net washed alone, or a net stuffed full (common)

The drum holds a single mesh bag, or a bag packed so tight its contents cannot move.

  5. 5. The washer is not level (common)

It thumps or shifts during spin, or it rocks when you push down on one corner.

  6. 6. Worn shock absorbers or suspension (less common)

UE keeps returning with ordinary mixed loads on a washer that sits level and firm, or an empty spin is loud.

When to call a pro

  • UE comes back with normal mixed loads after the washer has been leveled.
  • An empty-drum spin is loud, or the drum knocks against the cabinet.
  • The washer walks across the floor during spin even with a balanced load.
  • You hear grinding or rumbling from the drum, which can point to worn bearings.

What a UE repair costs

$100–$350

HomeGuide's 2026 national range for new washer shock absorbers, parts and labor. Spreading out a load or leveling the washer costs nothing, and HomeGuide puts the minimum service fee at $70 to $130.

UE means the washer already tried to fix it

LG describes UE as the error left over after the drum has made its own attempt to spread the load. It turns back and forth to untangle the clothes, and only when the weight is still piled on one side does it stop and show UE. LG's front-load help page lists the same code as Ub on some displays.

On LG top loaders the rebalancing is easy to mistake for a fault. LG says the washer may add water and start moving as if it were rinsing, to shift the laundry. That can take up to two tries and add about 10 minutes to the spin. If the tub balances, the spin carries on; if it cannot, you see UE.

Loads LG says cause trouble

Some of them look harmless. One knitted sweater soaks up enough water to unbalance the tub, so LG suggests washing at least two together. Padded jackets need to be pushed fully under the water once the tub fills. Too many laundry balls add vibration and noise.

Other items should not go in at all. LG lists bath mats, carpets, electric blankets, curtains and rubber mats as things that can be damaged, and waterproof clothing and stuffed toys as things that can damage the washer. Besides the damage, LG notes they spread their weight unevenly and drag out the spin.

What a technician will check

  • The shock absorbers and springs that hold the tub on a front loader, or the suspension rods on a top loader.
  • The drum bearings, for play or noise.
  • The motor and the sensing the washer uses to detect how the drum is moving.
  • The leveling legs, and whether the floor under the washer flexes.

Questions people ask about LG UE

Is UE the same as Ub on an LG washer?

Yes. LG's help page for front loaders names the code UE/Ub and gives one set of fixes for both. The label depends on the model's display.

Can I keep using my LG washer after a UE code?

Yes. UE is a load warning, not a broken part. Rearrange the laundry and restart. If it keeps coming back with sensible loads on a level washer, have the suspension checked before running many more cycles.

How much does it cost to fix an LG UE error?

Usually nothing, because the load or the leveling is the cause. If the shock absorbers are worn, HomeGuide puts replacement at $100 to $350 including labor.
