LG Washer LE Error Code: Motor Locked and Drum Won't Turn
Also shown or searched as: LE1
LE on an LG washer means the motor could not turn the drum. LG names an overloaded drum, a jammed coin or other object, and running loads back to back as causes. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, take out some laundry and remove anything stuck. If LE returns, or the drum grinds without turning, request service.
What to try first
Safety: Unplug the washer and take the laundry out before you reach into the drum for a stuck object. LG's steps start with the power off.
- 1
Unplug the washer for 5 minutes
Pull the plug or switch off the washer's breaker, wait 5 minutes, then restore power and start the cycle again. If the code came from a passing glitch, this clears it.
- 2
Lighten the load
Take part of the laundry out and spread the rest around the drum. Wash comforters and blankets on their own, on the Bedding, Blanket or Duvet cycle.
- 3
Look for anything stuck in the drum
With the washer off and empty, check the drum holes and seams for coins, hairpins, underwires or paper clips, and pull them out with pliers or tweezers. On a top loader, look closely at the gap between the wash plate and the drum.
- 4
Give the washer a break
If it has been running cycle after cycle, let it sit idle for a while before you try again.
Most likely causes of LE
1. Too much laundry in the drum (most common)
The drum was packed full, or a comforter or blanket went in on a regular cycle and soaked up water.
2. A coin, underwire or other small object jammed in the drum (common)
You heard scraping or clicking before the code, or something metal shows in the drum holes or the seams. On a top loader, look in the gap between the wash plate and the drum.
3. The washer has been running loads back to back (common)
LE came up late in a long laundry day, after several cycles with no break in between.
4. A passing glitch (common)
LE clears after the washer has been unplugged for 5 minutes and does not come back on the next load.
5. A fault in the motor, its sensor or its wiring (less common)
LE keeps returning with small loads and an empty drum, or the washer makes noise while the drum stays still.
When to call a pro
- LE comes back after the reset with a normal-size load and nothing stuck in the drum.
- The drum stays still while the washer makes noise. LG says to unplug it and request service.
- You can see an object wedged between the drum and the tub that pliers cannot reach.
- CE appears and stays after a 10-second unplug. LG says that points to the motor circuit and needs a repair.
What a LE repair costs
$100–$700
HomeGuide's 2026 national figures, parts and labor: most washer repairs, such as a sensor or a loose connection, fall in the $100 to $400 average range, and replacing the motor runs $300 to $700. A reset, a lighter load or fishing out a coin costs nothing; minimum service fees run $70 to $130.
SourceWhat LG means by a locked motor
LG's top-load help page spells LE out as a Motor Locker Error: the motor tried to turn the drum and could not. Its front-load list puts it in plain terms, the tub fails to spin. The causes LG gives are mostly outside the motor itself: a load that is too heavy, a coin caught in the works, or a washer run without breaks. That is why LG's first steps are a reset and a lighter load rather than a new part.
LE, LE1, AE and CE
LG groups LE with LE1 on its top-load list: both mean the motor is stuck. AE sits next to them under the same rotation-error heading but points to the gears that turn the drum, not the motor. A coin trapped between the wash plate and the drum can set off any of the three, so the first check is the same.
CE looks similar on the display but is a different fault. LG says it means too much current in the motor circuit, from a short, a loose connection, a ground fault or a power surge. LG's advice is to unplug the washer for 10 seconds and try again, and if CE stays, to close the water tap, unplug the washer and book a repair.
What a technician will check
- The rotor and stator of the motor, for damage or a loose mount.
- The rotor position sensor (Hall sensor) that tells the washer where the motor is, and its plug.
- The wiring harness between the motor and the washer's controls.
- The drum bearings and the space between drum and tub, for a seized bearing or a trapped object.

Questions people ask about LG LE
Should I keep restarting my LG washer when it shows LE?
No. Do the 5-minute reset once and check the load and the drum. If LE comes back after that, LG's advice is to unplug the washer and contact service rather than keep trying.
Does LE mean the motor is broken?
Not necessarily. LG's own list of causes starts with overloading and stuck objects, which cost nothing to fix. A motor, sensor or wiring fault is what is left when LE keeps returning with a light load and a clear drum.
How much does it cost to fix an LG LE error?
Often nothing. If the motor itself has to be replaced, HomeGuide puts the job at $300 to $700 including labor. A technician may find a smaller fault first, such as a sensor or a loose connection.
