LG Washer OE Error Code: Won't Drain? LG's Checks and Fixes
Also shown or searched as: 0E, E03, E21
OE on an LG washer means it could not drain the water it used; LG lists E03 and E21 as the same fault. Straighten the drain hose, run Spin Only and listen for the pump, then clean the drain pump filter on a front loader. If OE comes back after a Tub Clean, the washer needs a repair.
What to try first
Safety: Water left in the drum can still be hot; LG says to let it cool before you drain it. Turn the washer off before opening the filter panel, and keep towels ready, because the drum can hold more water than one pan.
- 1
Let the water cool first
LG warns that the water inside may still be hot. Give it time to cool, then set a shallow pan and a towel in front of the washer before you open anything.
- 2
Straighten the drain hose
Pull the washer forward far enough to see the hose behind it. Undo any fold or pinch and clear anything stuck in the hose end, then leave a little space so the hose can hang without bending.
- 3
Run Spin Only and listen
Turn the washer on, press Spin Speed until High is selected, and press Start/Pause. In the first 15 seconds you should hear the drain pump hum, and maybe water moving.
- 4
Clean the drain pump filter (front loaders)
With the washer off, open the access panel at the lower front (left on most models, right on some). Pull the small residual-water hose into your pan, remove its plug and let it empty, without stretching it so far that it kinks. Plug it and tuck it back. Turn the filter counterclockwise, pick out lint and lost items, scrub it with a soft brush, and turn it clockwise until it stops.
- 5
Do the bucket test
Lift the drain hose out of the standpipe, hold its end in a bucket, and run a spin. If water rushes into the bucket, the washer drains fine and the house drain needs clearing.
- 6
Run Tub Clean and use less detergent
If the filter was already clean, run a Tub Clean cycle, cut your detergent dose, then start a normal cycle to see whether OE is gone.
- 7
Thaw a frozen hose with warm water
Pour warm (never boiling) water into the drum, close the door and wait 1 to 2 hours, then run Spin. Boiling water is a burn risk, and LG asks for warm water only.
Most likely causes of OE
1. A kinked, pinched or clogged drain hose (most common)
The washer was pushed back toward the wall recently, or the hose folds sharply where it leaves the cabinet.
2. A clogged drain pump filter (front loaders and washer-dryer combos) (most common)
The pump hums during Spin Only but the drum stays full. Coins, hairpins, buttons and lint are what usually turn up in the filter.
3. Too many suds in the drum (common)
The filter and hose are clear, you pour detergent by eye, or foam shows through the door glass.
4. A clogged house drain (common)
Water pours freely from the hose when it is held over a bucket, or the standpipe overflows during a drain.
5. A frozen drain hose or pump (less common)
The washer sits in a garage or another unheated space, and OE first appeared after a freezing night.
6. A failed drain pump (less common)
Silence during the first 15 seconds of Spin Only, even with a clean filter and a straight hose.
When to call a pro
- You hear nothing at all during Spin Only, even after cleaning the filter and straightening the hose.
- The pump hums, the filter and hose are clear, and the drum still holds water.
- OE returns after a Tub Clean and a normal cycle. LG says the washer may then need a repair service.
- The filter will not unscrew by hand, or water keeps leaking around it after you refit it.
- The standpipe overflows during the bucket test: that is a plumber's job, not a washer repair.
What a OE repair costs
$150–$350
HomeGuide's 2026 national range for a new washer drain pump, parts and labor. A replacement drain hose runs $100 to $200. Straightening a hose, clearing the filter or cutting back on detergent costs nothing; the minimum service fee is $70 to $130.
SourceOE, 0E, E03 and E21: one LG drain fault
LG's front-load error list puts OE, E03 and E21 on one line and gives them one meaning: the washer cannot drain the water it used in the wash. Which label you see depends on the model's display. LG calls OE the Water Outlet Error, the drain-side partner of the IE inlet error.
On a segment display the letter O and the number 0 look identical, so plenty of owners search for 0E. It is the same code, with the same checks.
How LG's spin test separates a clog from a dead pump
LG's checklist includes a simple listening test: run Spin Only and pay attention to the first 15 seconds. A humming pump means the motor works, so the blockage is in the filter, the hose or the house drain, and those are all things you can clear. No sound at all means cleaning will not help; the pump, or the power reaching it, needs a technician.
Why too much detergent can cause a drain error
This one surprises people. When the filter is clean, LG points to suds: foam builds air pockets that the drain pump cannot push out. Once the pump is pulling air instead of water, it signals a drain problem, and OE appears with nothing blocked at all. That is why LG's last home step is a Tub Clean cycle and a smaller dose, not a new pump.
OE on an LG top loader
LG says the drain pump filter exists only on its front loaders and washer-dryer combos. On a top loader the checks are the drain hose and the house drain. LG's top-load list adds that OE can follow a drain hose that was installed incorrectly, and that coins sometimes end up inside the hose itself, where tweezers can reach them once the hose is off the washer.
What a technician will check
- The drain pump motor and its impeller, including whether the impeller turns freely or has a broken vane.
- The hose between the tub and the pump, where a sock or a small item can lodge past the filter.
- Whether power reaches the pump from the washer's controls, and the wiring between them.
- The pressure sensor that tells the washer whether the tub has emptied.

Questions people ask about LG OE
How often should I clean the drain pump filter on an LG washer?
LG says at least once a month. Its help page warns that coins, hairpins and lint left in the filter can slow draining, leave a smell on laundry, stop the drum from spinning properly and even damage the pump motor.
How do I get the water out before I open the filter?
Use the small residual-water hose next to the filter, behind the same access panel. Lay it in a shallow pan, pull out its plug and let it run, emptying the pan as often as needed. Only then unscrew the filter.
How much does it cost to fix an LG OE error?
Often nothing, when the cause is a kinked hose, a full filter or too much detergent. If the drain pump has failed, HomeGuide puts a replacement at $150 to $350 with labor, and a new drain hose at $100 to $200.
