GE Washer H2O SUPPLY Error (H20): No Water Coming In, What to Do

Low urgencyUpdated Checked against GE Appliances

Also shown or searched as: H2O, H20, H20 SUPPLY, IE

H2O SUPPLY on a GE washer, often typed as H20, means the washer cannot sense water coming in. GE names two causes, supply valves turned off or a pressure sensor problem, and in rare cases very low water pressure. Open both taps fully, wait out the 4-minute lockout, and restart. If it returns with the water on, book service.

What to try first

Safety: Unplug the washer and close both taps before you loosen the fill hoses. Keep a bucket under them for the water left inside.

  1. 1

Open both taps all the way

Turn the hot and cold taps behind the washer until they stop. GE's first suggestion for this message is to confirm the water is actually on, because valves are easy to forget after an install or a trip.

  2. 2

    Let the 4-minute lockout finish

As soon as H2O SUPPLY scrolls, GE washers lock their controls for about 4 minutes (3 on some top loaders), and the buttons do nothing. Leave the washer plugged in, since pulling the plug restarts the timer. When the controls wake up, choose your cycle and press Start.

  3. 3

    Follow both fill hoses

Pull the washer forward a few inches and trace each hose from tap to washer. Undo any fold or flattened spot, and make sure the hose from the tap marked H goes to the hot inlet and the one from C goes to the cold, as GE's manual asks.

  4. 4

    Rinse the inlet screens

Unplug the washer and close both taps. Loosen the hose couplings at the back with slip-joint pliers and let the hoses drain into a bucket. The screens sit inside the washer's inlet fittings and, on some hoses, in the hose ends. Rinse them and brush off sediment; GE says metal screens pry out gently with a small screwdriver and plastic ones pull out with long-nose pliers. Reconnect, open the taps and look for drips.

  5. 5

    Compare with another faucet

Run the laundry sink or a nearby tap at full flow. A weak stream there too means the house supply is low, and no washer repair will fix that.

Most likely causes of H2O SUPPLY

  1. 1. Supply taps turned off or only partly open (most common)

The message shows up on the first load after an install, a move, plumbing work or a vacation. GE's own help text asks whether the valves were turned back on after installation or a trip away.

  2. 2. Dirty inlet screens or a folded fill hose (common)

Filling has been slowing down for weeks, or the washer was pushed back recently and a hose may be bent behind it. GE notes that some models time out if a fill takes 20 to 40 minutes.

  3. 3. A pressure sensor problem (common)

Both taps are open and you can hear or see water entering the tub, yet the message still appears. The washer misjudged the level; the supply itself is fine.

  4. 4. Very low water pressure in the house (less common)

GE calls this a rare cause. Every faucet in the house runs weak, or the utility has been working on the water main.

  5. 5. A water inlet valve that will not open (less common)

The taps are on and the hoses are full, but there is no sound of running water from the washer at all when a cycle starts.

When to call a pro

  • The taps are fully open, the hoses and screens are clear, and H2O SUPPLY still appears. GE recommends service at that point.
  • Water clearly runs into the tub but the message keeps coming back.
  • Water keeps trickling into the washer while it is switched off. Close both taps and leave it unplugged until it is checked.
  • Pressure is weak at every tap in the house: that calls for a plumber or the water utility, not an appliance technician.

What a H2O SUPPLY repair costs

$100–$250

HomeGuide's 2026 national range for replacing a washer pressure switch, the part that senses water level, parts and labor. A water inlet valve runs $100 to $300. On the GTW750 top loader, GE mounts the pressure sensor on the control board and says the whole board gets replaced, which HomeGuide puts at $350 to $550. Opening a tap or rinsing screens costs nothing.

Why a GE front loader drains when no water came in

It sounds backwards, but GE says a front-load washer showing H2O SUPPLY normally runs its drain pump for about 4 minutes. If the pressure sensing system is the part that failed, the washer has no reliable idea how much water is inside, so it pumps out to rule out an overfill. A pump humming right after the message is the washer protecting itself, not a second fault.

How a sensing fault ends up as a supply message

GE's display guide for top loaders defines H2O SUPPLY as the washer being unable to sense the water level. The level is read from air pressure in a thin tube running from the tub to a sensor, so a pinched tube or a failed sensor can look to the washer just like a closed tap.

That is why GE lists the pressure sensor right next to the valves. If you can see water in the drum and the message still appears, more hose checks will not help; that one is for a technician.

What a technician will check

  • The pressure sensor and the thin tube that links it to the tub, looking for a kink, water trapped inside, or on top loaders a pinch where the tube passes through the top cover.
  • The sensor's reading against GE's pressure chart for the water level actually in the basket.
  • Whether each inlet valve opens when the washer calls for water, and whether any valve leaks when it should be shut.
  • Flow at the taps with the hoses off, to rule the house supply in or out.

Questions people ask about GE H2O SUPPLY

Is it H20 or H2O on a GE washer?

GE spells it H2O, the chemical shorthand for water, with the letter O. Many people type a zero instead, so H20 searches land on the same message. There is no separate H20 code.

Is IE the same as H2O SUPPLY?

Yes. GE's Consumer Help Indicator chart puts H2O SUPPLY, IE and blinking Wash and Rinse lights in one row with one meaning: water is not entering the washer. On 2015 and newer top loaders, GE says a flashing Fill light belongs to the same problem. Which one you see depends on the model and its display.

My washer sat in a cold garage. Could that cause it?

It can. GE notes that water left in a washer's pump can freeze in below-freezing storage and lock the motor, so give the washer time to thaw. Taps and hoses in an unheated space freeze too, and no water gets through until they thaw.
