GE Washer Code 27: Water Left in the Tub With the Lid Open
Also shown or searched as: Fault 27
On GE top loaders with a numbered fault list, such as the GTW750, code 27 (Water Accessibility) means water sat in the tub with the lid open for over 15 minutes during a cycle. The washer cancels the cycle and pumps out. Keep the lid shut during cycles; if 27 keeps returning, have a leaking water valve ruled out.
What to try first
- 1
Close the lid and drain
Shut the lid, select Drain & Spin and press Start. That empties anything left behind, and the next cycle can start clean.
- 2
Watch the empty tub for a while
After a load finishes and the tub is empty, leave the lid up for 15 minutes or so and look inside now and then. Any water arriving while the washer sits idle points to an inlet valve that does not shut fully.
- 3
Try a load with spin turned on
If you often use No Spin, run the same kind of load with a normal spin setting and see whether 27 still turns up.
- 4
Check what was logged alongside it
On the GTW750, from idle with all lights off, hold Start for about 10 seconds until the lights come on. The most recent code shows first and Start steps through the rest. If 27 sits beside other numbers, those deserve a look too.
Most likely causes of 27
1. The lid was left up in the middle of a cycle (most common)
Someone opened the lid to add an item or look at the load and walked away. GE's guide lists talking this through with the owner as one of the fixes.
2. The No Spin option (common)
The load was washed with spin turned off. GE's service guide names this option as one thing that can set off 27.
3. A water valve leaking into the tub (less common)
Water creeps into the empty tub while the washer is idle with the lid up, even though no cycle is running. GE puts leaking water valves first among the checks for 27.
4. A pressure sensor reading water that is not there (less common)
The tub is visibly empty and nobody left the lid open, yet 27 keeps appearing. GE has technicians run the pressure sensor test to rule this out.
When to call a pro
- Water comes into the tub while the washer is off. Close both taps until the inlet valve is checked.
- 27 keeps getting logged although nobody leaves the lid open and you do not use No Spin.
- 27 appears together with 18, the drain fault, and the tub drains slowly or not at all.
What a 27 repair costs
$100–$300
HomeGuide's 2026 national range for replacing a washer water inlet valve, parts and labor, the repair GE's guide points to first. Most 27s need no repair at all: keeping the lid closed costs nothing. A service call alone usually runs $70 to $130.
SourceWhat GE calls Water Accessibility
GE's technical service guide for its 27-inch top loaders describes fault 27 simply: during a cycle, water was left in the tub with the lid open for more than 15 minutes. The same guide explains what the washer does next. Once water has been sitting under an open lid that long, it cancels the cycle and drains.
So if you came back to an empty tub, wet clothes and a cycle that will not resume, the washer did what it was designed to do. Pick a new cycle and start again.
Mostly a habit, sometimes a part
The repair column GE gives for 27 is a mix. One line is plain owner education about leaving the lid open, and another mentions the No Spin option. But GE also tells technicians to check for leaking water valves and to test the pressure sensor. If nobody in the house leaves the lid up, those two parts are where the answer lies.
27 on other GE top loaders
The fault list on this page comes from GE's guide for the GTW750. The number is not limited to that family: on the Appliantology repair forum, someone maintaining a GTW335 in a rental read 27, Water Accessibility, together with 18. They first put it down to the lid being left open, and the same pair came back weeks later. The thread ends without a confirmed fix, which is a fair warning that a repeat 27 deserves a proper look.
What a technician will check
- The water inlet valves, for a slow leak into the tub when they should be closed.
- Pressure sensor operation, using test 10 in GE's service mode to confirm the reading matches the water in the basket.
- The rest of the fault history, to see whether 27 travels with a drain or pressure fault.

Questions people ask about GE 27
How long can the lid stay open during a cycle?
GE's guide sets the limit at 15 minutes with water in the tub. Past that, the cycle is cancelled, the water is pumped out and 27 goes into the fault history.
Is code 27 related to code 19?
They are close cousins. 19 is logged when a cycle sits paused for more than 12 hours; 27 covers water left with the lid open for over 15 minutes. Both end the old cycle, and on their own neither means a part has failed.
Does 27 mean my washer is leaking on the floor?
No. The leak GE mentions is water trickling into the tub through an inlet valve that does not close fully. Water on the floor under the washer is a separate problem with its own causes.
