GE Washer Code 19: Cycle Paused Too Long (Not a Real Fault)
Also shown or searched as: Fault 19
On GE top-load washers with a numbered fault list, such as the GTW750, code 19 is a UI State Time-out: a cycle stayed paused for more than 12 hours. GE's service guide calls it normal operation, not a fault. Run Drain & Spin to empty any water, then start a new cycle. Nothing needs to be repaired.
What to try first
- 1
Drain the old water
Close the lid, choose Drain & Spin and press Start. GE gives this step for any time water is left in the basket after a cycle stops early.
- 2
Sit out the lockout if CAnCELEd scrolls
A paused cycle that times out can show CAnCELEd on the display. GE then holds the controls for 4 minutes, and unplugging the washer only starts that timer over. Wait, then pick a cycle.
- 3
Rewash before drying
Clothes that sat wet for half a day or longer can pick up a sour smell. Run them through a fresh cycle before they go in the dryer.
- 4
Look at what else was logged
If nobody pressed Pause, check the stored list. On the GTW750, with every light off, press and hold Start for about 10 seconds, release when the lights come on, and press Start to step from the newest code to the oldest. A different number next to 19 is the one worth looking up.
Most likely causes of 19
1. Someone pressed Pause and the load was forgotten (most common)
A sock was added mid-wash or the lid was opened to check something, and the washer sat until the next morning with the Start light blinking.
2. A load left to soak on purpose (common)
You paused a cycle so a stained load could sit in the water. Once the pause runs past the time limit, the washer treats it the same way.
3. The washer paused itself (less common)
Nobody touched the panel, yet 19 is in the list. GE's guide notes the control can also put a cycle into pause, so another code logged just before 19 usually holds the reason.
When to call a pro
- Other fault numbers sit next to 19 and the washer keeps stopping on its own in the middle of a cycle.
- CAnCELEd scrolls again on new loads you never paused. GE says to call for service if the problem persists.
- The washer still will not start a new cycle after the 4-minute lockout has passed.
What a 19 repair costs
$0: no repair needed
GE's service guide calls 19 normal operation, so no part has failed and there is nothing to repair. If another fault turns out to be stopping the washer, a service call alone usually runs $70 to $130 (HomeGuide, 2026).
SourceWhat GE means by UI State Time-out
UI stands for user interface, the control panel. GE's technical service guide for its 27-inch top loaders defines fault 19 in one line: the washer was paused for over 12 hours. Under repair action it says this is normal operation, and that it happens when either the person or the control switches the cycle to a paused state.
In other words, 19 is a record, not a breakdown. The washer gave up on a cycle that nobody came back to, and it noted that in its fault history.
12 hours or 24?
GE's own paperwork is not consistent here. The fault table and the CAnCELEd note in the service guide both say 12 hours. Another page of the same guide, and the owner's manual for the GTW680 to GTW755 family, say the washer cancels and drains after 24 hours paused with the lid closed. Treat it as half a day or more and do not worry about the exact figure.
19 and 27: two time limits on standing water
The washer does not hold water forever. GE's manual lists two limits for water left in the tub: 24 hours with the lid closed, or 15 minutes with the lid open. Go past either one and the old cycle is cancelled and the water pumped out. A cycle left in pause too long is logged as 19; water standing in the tub with the lid up for more than 15 minutes is logged as 27, Water Accessibility.
What a technician will check
- The full fault history, to find which fault made the washer pause or stop by itself.
- Whether a button on the panel sticks. GE's guide gives a stuck button its own number, 30, for a press that lasts over 60 seconds.
- The lid switch and lid lock, since lid faults can also halt a cycle partway.

Questions people ask about GE 19
Why did my GE washer drain the water by itself?
That is the time limit at work. GE's owner's manual says the washer pumps out and cancels the cycle when water has sat 24 hours with the lid closed or 15 minutes with the lid open. Close the lid, pick a new cycle and press Start.
Do I need to clear code 19?
No. It stays in the history, which holds up to 10 entries, and newer codes push it down the list. A technician can wipe the list from service mode, but that changes nothing about how the washer runs.
Can I still pause a GE washer to add clothes?
Yes. Pressing Pause unlocks the lid if it was locked and the Start light blinks; press Start again to carry on. Just come back within a few hours so the cycle is not cancelled.
