Electrolux Washer SU dS Code: Too Many Suds and How to Clear It

Low urgencyUpdated Checked against Electrolux US Support

Also shown or searched as: SUdS, SU, dS

SU dS on an Electrolux front load washer means it detected too many suds. The washer adds extra rinses, each about 5 minutes long, until the suds are gone. Press Cancel to turn off the alert. Then use a low-sudsing HE detergent, use less of it, and run an empty Quick Wash to clean out the leftovers.

What to try first

  1. 1

    Let the extra rinses run

Do not stop or restart the cycle. The washer keeps adding rinses on its own until the suds clear, so the time on the display will grow.

  2. 2

Press Cancel to clear the alert

Once the washer finishes, press Cancel to turn the SU dS message off.

  3. 3

    Run an empty Quick Wash

With nothing in the drum, run a Quick Wash cycle. Electrolux suggests this to clean leftover detergent out of the washer before the next load.

  4. 4

Dose for this load, not the last one

Use the cap or scoop that came with the detergent and follow the maker's guide. Electrolux says the right amount shifts with water temperature, water hardness, load size and how dirty the clothes are.

  5. 5

    Look for the HE symbol

Before you buy the next bottle, check the label for the HE mark. Electrolux says a low-sudsing HE formula is what prevents oversudsing in its front loaders.

Most likely causes of SU dS

  1. 1. More detergent than the load needs (most common)

You pour straight from the bottle or fill the cap to the top line, whatever the size of the load.

  2. 2. A regular detergent instead of a low-sudsing HE one (common)

The bottle has no HE symbol anywhere on its label.

  3. 3. The detergent cup filled past MAX (common)

Liquid sits above the MAX line in the dispenser, or it was poured over the blue cover instead of into the liquid cup on models with the Adaptive Dispenser.

  4. 4. Residue left from earlier heavy doses (common)

The alert appears even after a small, measured dose, or you find detergent residue in the door gasket or dispenser drawer. Electrolux links that residue to overdosing and non-HE detergent.

When to call a pro

  • SU dS keeps showing after empty Quick Wash cycles and loads washed with a small, measured dose of HE detergent.
  • Foam or water escapes from the dispenser drawer or around the door.
  • A drain alert such as E21 starts appearing along with the suds alert, even after you cut back on detergent.
  • The washer keeps adding rinses with no visible suds in the drum.

What a SU dS repair costs

$0: no repair needed

Electrolux's remedy for SU dS is detergent type and amount plus an empty Quick Wash; no part is replaced, so the fix costs nothing. If a technician has to inspect a washer that flags suds with no detergent in it, HomeGuide's 2026 minimum service fee is $70 to $130.

What SU dS means on an Electrolux washer

Electrolux calls this feature oversuds protection. When the washer detects too many suds, it adds rinses until they clear, and each extra rinse adds about 5 minutes to the cycle.

The display does not show the code all at once. The manual for the 300 to 700 Series says it shows SU, then dS, then the remaining time of 0 min, holds that for 60 seconds and repeats it until you press Cancel. Seen in passing, it can look like SU or dS on its own.

A long cycle is the first clue

Electrolux notes that the estimated time can increase when oversudsing occurs. So a load that runs well past its original estimate and then ends with SU dS is a dosing problem showing up twice. The washer did its job; the detergent amount is what needs to change.

Packs, powder and liquid in an Electrolux dispenser

Where detergent packs go depends on the dispenser. Electrolux's detergent guide says to put a pack in the drum before the laundry, never in the dispenser, because its gel coating can clog the detergent door. Newer 400 to 700 Series models add a pack compartment in the drawer that takes up to two packs, or one on a fast wash, with the PODS option selected.

In a three-compartment drawer, use liquid or powder in the detergent cup, never both together, and stay under the MAX line.

What a technician will check

  • The pressure switch and its air hose for leaks or a blockage.
  • Whether the drain hose and pump empty the tub at normal speed between rinses.
  • Detergent buildup inside the dispenser housing and in the folds of the door gasket.

Questions people ask about Electrolux SU dS

Does SU dS mean my Electrolux washer needs repair?

Usually not. Electrolux's SU dS steps are all about detergent: use HE detergent, use less of it, and run an empty Quick Wash. Its support article for this alert does not send you to service, unlike its articles for E11 and E21.

Can too many suds lead to a drain error?

They can slow the drain. Electrolux notes that too much detergent can inhibit draining. If E21 shows up after a sudsy load, cut the dose and clear the foam with a rinse before you treat it as a pump fault.

How often should I run the Clean Washer cycle?

Electrolux suggests once a month, and the washer lights the Clean Washer indicator every 50 cycles as a reminder. Use one cup of liquid chlorine bleach or one pouch of Tide Washing Machine Cleaner, never both, then run Rinse & Spin at max spin with nothing added.
