Electrolux Washer E21 Code: Slow to Drain? How to Fix It
Also shown or searched as: 21
E21 on an Electrolux front load washer means a long pump out time: water is not pumping out fast enough, or the drum takes too long to empty. Electrolux says a kinked drain hose is the most common cause. Free the hose, reset it loosely in the standpipe and cut back on detergent before calling for service.
What to try first
Safety: Never drain the drum by hand while it holds hot water; let it cool first. Keep a catch pan and a rag at hand, because the filter can release more water than one pan holds.
- 1
Let hot water cool first
If E21 stopped a hot wash, wait for the water to cool before draining anything by hand. Electrolux warns of a burn hazard when the drum is full of hot water.
- 2
Free the drain hose along its whole length
Pull the washer forward far enough to follow the drain hose from the back of the cabinet to the drain. Undo any fold or pinch, and make sure nothing heavy rests on it.
- 3
Seat the hose end the way Electrolux shows
Form the end into a U pointing toward the drain and slide it less than 8.5 inches into the standpipe, held with a cable tie so it cannot pop out. If someone taped it in, peel back enough tape to leave an air path around the hose.
- 4
Rule out the house drain
If the hose empties into a laundry sink, clear lint and hair from the sink drain. If the standpipe overflows or other drains in the home are slow, call a plumber rather than a washer technician.
- 5
Use less detergent
Stick to HE detergent, measure it with the cap or scoop, and keep it below the MAX line in the dispenser. If the drum is full of foam, Electrolux's manual says to run a rinse cycle, so clear it before you blame the pump.
- 6
Clean the pump filter, if your model has one
Some Electrolux models have a pump cleanout door low on the front. Open it, lower the flap and set a catch pan under the filter. Turn the filter half a turn counterclockwise without removing it and let the water run out, closing it whenever the pan fills. Then unscrew the filter, clear it, rinse it, check that its O-ring is in place and screw it back until it stops, without cross-threading or overtightening.
Most likely causes of E21
1. A kinked or flattened drain hose (most common)
Electrolux names this the most common E21 problem. Look for a fold behind the cabinet or a crushed spot where the hose drops into the drain.
2. The hose sealed into the standpipe, or a standpipe that is too tall (common)
Tape or a tight fitting closes the gap around the hose, or the pipe rises more than 8 feet. Electrolux says a standpipe needs air around the hose to drain properly.
3. A clogged house drain (common)
Water rises out of the standpipe, or a nearby laundry sink or floor drain is slow too. That points to the plumbing rather than the washer.
4. Too much detergent (common)
Thick foam fills the door glass late in the cycle. Electrolux warns that excess detergent can hold back draining.
5. A clogged pump filter or an object caught in the pump (common)
Coins or pins rattled during earlier cycles, or your model has a pump cleanout door that has not been opened in a long time.
6. A failed drain pump or pressure switch (less common)
Hose, standpipe and house drain are all clear, yet E21 keeps coming back and the pump sounds silent during the drain.
When to call a pro
- E21 returns once the hose, standpipe and house drain are clear. For washers installed more than 30 days ago, Electrolux says to schedule service.
- The washer was installed or moved in the last 30 days: Electrolux sends drain setup problems back to the installer.
- Something rattles in the pump and your model has no pump cleanout door. Electrolux's manual says to call an authorized technician.
- Water is left in the drum and there is no cleanout door to drain it safely.
- The standpipe or the house drain cannot meet Electrolux's drain requirements, which is work for a plumber.
What a E21 repair costs
$150–$350
Drain pump replacement, parts and labor, from HomeGuide's 2026 national cost table. A new drain hose costs $100 to $200 and a pressure switch $100 to $250. Freeing a kinked hose costs nothing; minimum service fees run $70 to $130.
SourceWhat E21 means on an Electrolux washer
Electrolux describes E21 as a long pump out time: the water is not pumping out fast enough, or the washer is taking too long to empty. The drum may still drain in the end. Slow is enough.
Electrolux's service guide for technicians explains why. It times every drain step of the cycle separately and pauses the cycle after the time limit is passed on two attempts. A partly blocked hose or a foamy load can run out the clock without stopping the water completely.
Why Electrolux's checklist starts with the installation
Every step in Electrolux's own E21 article concerns installation: the drain hose for kinks, the drain hose fitted as the manual shows, and the hot and cold supply hoses not reversed. It calls that last one a known installation issue. The article does not explain how swapped supply hoses affect draining, but if the washer is new or was just moved, check them as well.
Timing matters too. Within 30 days of installation, Electrolux refers E21 back to the installer. After that, it handles the problem as a service call.
Does your Electrolux have a pump filter?
Not every model has one you can reach. Some Electrolux use and care guides, such as the August 2020 edition, show a pump cleanout door at the bottom front with a filter you unscrew and rinse. The manual for the 300 to 700 Series washers has no pump filter section, and for a coin or pin rattling in the pump it tells you to call an authorized technician.
Look in the Care and Cleaning chapter of your own manual before hunting for a door. Do not pry at the front panel on a model that has none.
What a technician will check
- The drain filter and the hose from the tub to the pump, cleaned before any part is replaced.
- Whether the drain pump runs in a test drain, and whether its impeller is jammed or broken.
- The pump's electrical resistance and the wiring between the pump and the control board.
- The pressure switch and its air hose, which tell the washer when the tub has emptied.
- The control board, only after the pump and its wiring test good.

Questions people ask about Electrolux E21
My Electrolux shows AL 20 instead of E21. Is it the same problem?
Some Electrolux models flash alarms as AL followed by a two-character code. Their use and care guide lists AL 20 as the washer not draining water properly. The checks match: a drain hose free of kinks and clogs, connected properly, and a clear house drain.
What kind of drain does an Electrolux washer need?
The manual for the 300 to 700 Series asks for a drain that can carry away 17 gallons a minute, a standpipe at least 1-1/4 inches across, and a standpipe height between 24 inches and 8 feet above the floor.
Can I use a longer drain hose on my Electrolux?
Yes, with the right part. The standard hose is 59 inches long. For installations that need more, Electrolux's manual names hose P/N 137098000, sold through authorized parts distributors.
