Samsung Washer SUd Error Code: Too Many Suds and What to Do
Also shown or searched as: Sd, 5d, SUdS, 5UD, 5Ud5
SUd (also Sd, 5d or SUdS) on a Samsung washer means it detected too many suds. The washer pauses so the suds can settle, then finishes the cycle on its own. Samsung says it does not mean the washer needs service: it comes from detergent use, so use HE detergent and less of it.
What to try first
- 1
Let the cycle finish
The washer resumes on its own once the suds settle, so you do not need to restart it.
- 2
Run empty cycles until the suds are gone
Run a cycle with nothing in the drum and no detergent or softener, and watch for foam. Repeat until a cycle runs with no suds; this flushes out leftover detergent.
- 3
Measure the detergent
Use a measuring cup or spoon instead of pouring by eye, and use less for small loads.
- 4
Switch to HE detergent
Check the bottle for the HE mark. If your current HE detergent does not clean well, Samsung suggests trying a different one rather than adding more.
- 5
Put pods and sheets in the drum
Pods and detergent sheets go into the drum before the laundry, never into the drawer.
Most likely causes of SUd
1. Too much detergent (most common)
You pour by eye or fill the cap to the top. Samsung notes that HE detergent is very concentrated, so far less is needed than people expect.
2. Detergent that is not HE (common)
The bottle has no HE symbol, or it is an organic or natural formula.
3. Detergent filled above the MAX line (common)
The detergent cup in the drawer is filled past its MAX mark. Samsung says going over the line can damage clothes and the washer, including causing leaks.
4. Buildup from earlier overdosing (common)
Suds appear even with a small, measured dose. Samsung says overdosing leaves buildup inside the washer.
5. A pod or sheet in the wrong place (less common)
A pod or detergent sheet went into the drawer instead of the drum.
When to call a pro
- SUd keeps showing after several empty, detergent-free cycles show no suds at all.
- Water or foam leaks from the detergent drawer or the door.
- The washer stops and does not resume on its own after the suds have cleared.
- Other codes start to appear alongside SUd, such as a drain or water level error.
What a SUd repair costs
$0: no repair needed
Samsung says SUd does not indicate that service is needed: it is caused by how detergent is used. The fix is the right detergent in the right amount. If a sensor turns out to be the problem, a service call alone usually runs $70 to $130 (HomeGuide, 2026).
SourceWhat SUd means on a Samsung washer
Samsung lists SUd, 5UD, Sd, 5d, SUdS and 5Ud5 together as the excessive suds error. The washer has detected an over-sudsing condition and stops for a short period so the suds can dissipate. Then the cycle continues automatically, although the code may flash again at the end as a reminder.
Why HE washers foam over with too much detergent
High-efficiency washers use far less water than older machines, so the same scoop of detergent is much more concentrated in the drum. Samsung describes HE detergent as very concentrated and says you will not need as much. A full cap poured from habit is often more than a load needs.
Which detergents Samsung says to avoid
Samsung washers require HE detergent. Samsung warns against regular detergent, organic or natural detergent, and HE detergents that contain natural ingredients such as vinegar or baking soda, saying these can damage the washer.
Powder and liquid clean about equally well according to Samsung, though powder can be harder to dissolve in cold water.
What a technician will check
- The water level sensor and its small hose.
- Whether the washer drains at normal speed.
- Detergent buildup in the dispenser housing and around the tub.
- The door or drawer seals, if foam has been escaping.
Questions people ask about Samsung SUd
Do I need to call a repair service for a SUd code?
Usually not. Samsung says SUd does not indicate that service is needed; it comes from how detergent is used. Measure the detergent, use HE detergent and run empty cycles to clear the excess.
How much detergent should I use in a Samsung washer?
Samsung does not give a fixed amount. It says to follow the detergent maker's guidance for your load size and never fill past the MAX line in the drawer.
Can I use detergent pods in a Samsung washer?
Yes, if they are HE pods. Put them in the drum before the clothes, not in the drawer. On Flex Wash models, Samsung says not to use pods or sheets in the small top washer.
Why do I still get SUd after using less detergent?
Leftover detergent from earlier loads can still foam. Run empty cycles with no detergent or softener until no suds appear. If the code keeps showing with no suds at all, have the washer checked.
