Samsung Washer 5C or SC Error Code: Won't Drain? How to Fix It
Also shown or searched as: SC, 5E, SE, nd, 1 5C
On a Samsung washer, 5C (also SC, 5E, SE or nd) means water is not draining at the right speed, or at all. Check that the drain hose sits 6 to 8 inches into the standpipe without kinks, then clean the pump filter on a front loader. If it still won't drain, the drain pump may need a technician.
What to try first
Safety: Water left in the washer after a hot cycle can scald: Samsung says to let it cool for about an hour before draining. Expect several gallons; use a towel and a wide, shallow pan.

Let hot water cool for about an hour
If a hot cycle such as Sanitize or Pure Cycle ran recently, Samsung says to wait roughly an hour before draining the washer by hand, so the water cannot scald you.
- 2
Check the drain hose against Samsung's measurements
The hose should go 6 to 8 inches into the standpipe or sink, held with a zip tie so it cannot slide deeper. Deeper than 8 inches, or sealed airtight, it creates a siphon; shallower than 6, it can fall out and flood the floor. It should sit at least 18 inches high (24 for a sink) and no higher than 96 inches (35 for a sink), with no kinks.

Clean the pump filter on a front loader
Press the cover at the front of the washer to open the filter panel. Put a towel and a wide, shallow pan under the small rubber drain hose, twist off its cap and let the water out. Then twist the filter counterclockwise to remove it, brush it clean, check that the impeller behind it is free of debris, and screw it back in clockwise until it sits upright. Cap the small hose and clip it back before closing the panel.
- 4
Make sure the washer is level
Rock the washer by its opposite corners. If it moves, turn the adjustable feet until all four rest firmly on the floor, then tighten their lock nuts if your model has them.
- 5
Run a test cycle
Turn the washer back on and start a cycle. Samsung says it should drain at the beginning of the test cycle; if it does not, the next step is service.
Most likely causes of 5C
1. A drain hose installed too deep, too tight, kinked or at the wrong height (most common)
Samsung calls incorrect drain hose installation the most common reason for drain problems. Look for a bend behind the washer or a hose pushed far down the standpipe.
2. A clogged pump filter (front loaders) (most common)
Coins, hair ties, lint or a small sock collect in the filter. Only front loaders have one; top loaders have no removable pump filter.
3. The washer is not level (common)
Samsung notes that a washer that is not level may not drain correctly. Look for a washer that rocks or sits at a visible tilt.
4. A slow or blocked house drain (less common)
Water backs up out of the standpipe, or a nearby sink or floor drain is also slow. That is a plumbing problem rather than a washer fault.
5. A failed drain pump (less common)
The hose and filter are fine, but the washer still does not drain at the start of a test cycle. You may hear the pump hum with no water moving, or hear nothing at all.
When to call a pro
- The washer still does not drain at the start of a test cycle after the hose and pump filter check out.
- The drain hose is cracked or damaged. Samsung says to request service.
- The holder that clamps the drain hose to the back of the washer is missing. Samsung says service is required.
- Water backs up out of the standpipe or other drains in the house are slow: call a plumber for the house drain.
What a 5C repair costs
$150–$350
HomeGuide's 2026 national range for replacing a washer drain pump, parts and labor. A new drain hose runs $100 to $200. Fixing a hose position or a clogged filter yourself costs nothing; a service call alone usually runs $70 to $130.
SourceWhat 5C means on a Samsung washer
Samsung lists nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC and 1 5C together as the no drain error: water is not draining from the washer at the correct speed, or at all.
Samsung's wording, at the correct speed, matters: the code can appear even when some water is still getting out. A slow drain is enough, so check the pump filter and the drain hose even if the drum partly empties.
Why a washer that drained fine for years can start showing 5C
Samsung points out that problems from a badly installed drain hose do not always show up right after installation. They can build over time until they are bad enough to cause drain or spin errors, so check the hose even if nobody has touched it in years.
5C and a washer that will not spin
A washer drains before it spins, so if it cannot drain it never reaches the spin step. That is why Samsung's guide for a washer that does not spin starts with the pump filter and the drain hose.
Once the drain is fixed, Samsung suggests running Calibration mode if the drum still will not spin. Empty the drum, hold Temp. and Delay End for 3 seconds until Cb appears (some models need the washer off first, then Power while holding the buttons), and press Start. Check your manual if your model uses different buttons.
What a technician will check
- Whether the drain pump runs, and whether its impeller is jammed or broken.
- The hose between the tub and the pump, where a sock or small item can lodge past the filter.
- Power to the pump from the control board and the wiring between them.
- The water level sensor, which tells the washer whether the tub has emptied.
Questions people ask about Samsung 5C
Is 5C the same as SC on a Samsung washer?
Yes. Samsung lists nd, 5E, SE, 5C, SC and 1 5C as the same no drain error. The 5 and the S look alike on the display, so people search for both.
Where is the drain filter on a Samsung washer?
On front loaders it is behind a small cover panel at the front of the washer, near the floor. Press the cover to open it. Top loaders do not have a removable pump filter, so on those the drain hose and the pump itself are what to check.
How often should I clean the pump filter?
Samsung recommends about once a month or every 40 washes, whichever comes first. A clogged filter slows draining and can also cause odors.
Can I use a drain hose extension with my Samsung washer?
Samsung says not to use a drain hose extension kit. If the hose does not reach, the washer or the standpipe needs to move rather than the hose being lengthened.
How much does it cost to fix a 5C error?
Often nothing, when the cause is the hose position or a clogged filter. If the drain pump has failed, HomeGuide puts replacement at $150 to $350 including labor, and a new drain hose at $100 to $200.
